REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE FOR THE IMPORTATION OF

Biological Products

GENERAL

A veterinary medicine can be defined as a biological product (e.g. a vaccine) or a pharmaceutical product e.g. an antibiotic or hormonal preparation.

A biological  product could also, apart from vaccines, include blood or serum from animals; test kits for diagnosing animal diseases or assessing the immune status of animals that contain viral, bacterial or other antigens or viruses; bacteria to be used for research etc

PROCEDURES FOR IMPORTATION

 

No veterinary medicine may be imported without the necessary permission (a veterinary import permit). The same applies to other biological products, including blood or serum from animals; test kits that contain viral, bacterial or other antigens or viruses; bacteria etc to be used for research.
A veterinary vaccine or veterinary pharmaceutical product may only be imported once it is registered for use in the country either in terms of the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act (Act 36 of 1947) or the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act (Act 101 of 1965). An import permit in terms of the Animal Diseases Act (Act 35 of 1984) is subsequently required for the actual entry into the country.

In the case of animal blood/serum, test kits or micro-organisms for research purposes no registration is required, only an import permit in terms of the Animal Diseases Act (Act 35 of 1984).
