support of sustainable use of genetic resources for food and
agriculture.

Main aims and activities |
| Drafting legislation on genetic resources | |
| Responsible for the development, standardisation, publication and regulation of norms for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic material for food and agriculture | |
| Promote the availability of propagating material of superior quality in pursuit of optimal and sustainable utilisation of the available agricultural and natural resources | |
| Regulate the improvement of propagating material | |
| Develop, coordinate and implement programmes, strategies and action plans for the conservation and sustainable use of genetic resources for food and agriculture | |
| Regulate, develop and set norms and standards for genetically modified organisms | |
| Regulate the importation and exportation of animal genetic material and the activities of animal breed societies as well as registration authorities | |
| Facilitate programmes to promote the sustainable use of farm animal genetic resources with special reference to indigenous and locally-developed breeds | |
| Maintain an animal-identification system to register owner-identification marks as an aid measure in the prevention of stock theft | |
| Render registration and certification services to the artificial reproduction industry (farm animals) | |
| Play an important role in the assurance of both short and long-term food security for the nation |
