An Agro-Climate Information System on the Agricultural Geo-referenced Information System (AGIS) web page was launched recently. The Department of Agriculture has ppointed the Institute for Soil, Climate and Water (ISCW) of the Agricultural Research Council to develop the system. The purpose of the system is to make up-to-date meteorological and climate-related information available to the farming community. The information can be accessed by visiting www.agis.agric.za/climate. With this system the ISCW can interpret the information of 700 weather stations countrywide. The web page will contribute considerably towards making meteorogical and agricultural management information accessible for decision-making purposes. AGIS information deals with a variety of subjects such as agri-statistics, economic advice, reports on migrating pests, weeds and invasive plants, agricultural marketing and veld management. The UMLINDI newsletter, the Watchman and the Department's monthly advice to farmers can also be viewed on the system.
