The Director-General of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Njabulo Nduli and Ethekwini Mayor, Obed Mlaba, converged at Briardene in Durban on 21 July to witness the third fruitful launch of the Foodbank. The main purpose of the Foodbank is to coordinate South Africa 's fragmented efforts to fight food insecurity and engage with food donors, food manufacturers, retailers, faith-based organisations and government in addressing hunger in the country.

During the launch, Ms Njabulo Nduli said South Africa produces and imports enough food to meet its domestic and export demands. However, other South Africans are still food insecure as a result of the inaccessibility of food. Moreover, she highlighted that food accessibility and its stability remain a huge challenge to the poor and vulnerable groups in this country.

“In South Africa , people who are experiencing hunger are not only in the rural areas. Due to rural-urban migration of people looking for jobs, urban areas have recently seen an increase in the number of food insecure individuals who owns no production resources. The South African Foodbank Network has the ability to solve both rural and urban food insecurity, through the provision of food to the hunger vulnerable and poor individuals of the society,” stated the Director-General.

Her words were supported by the Mayor, who said that South Africans have an opportunity to improve their livelihoods because of the Foodbank. “This launch is at the right time because our people need food and, this is the kind of project that will assist our destitute families,” concluded Mlaba.

Foodbank Durban comprises 17 permanent employees, including those that are based in Pietermaritzburg. The initiative will also supply and assist almost 98 beneficiaries around Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Two Foodbanks in Cape Town and Johannesburg which have already been launched this year in March and May respectively will share the expertise with Foodbank Durban.
