The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) successfully hosted the 68 th plenary meeting of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) where 39 countries and 10 international organizations represented by 163 delegates concluded at the Cape Town International Convention Centre under the theme “The role of Cotton in Economic Development and Ensuring Food Security during a Period of Global Economic Crisis”

While it was imperative to discuss on economic issues relating to cotton consumption forecast, especially research and practices that will promote productivity, interest on cotton production and enhanced food security also occupied discussions with the committee deciding on looking into defining contributions of the cotton industry into food security.

Focus was on facilitating small holder cotton production where the critical importance and role played by these small enterprises was recognized. The committee called for an overall strategy to small holders. DAFF has since recognized this role of small holders and have subsequently grouped the farmers accordingly.

Other areas covered include cotton by products and value addition as well as support for conclusion of the Doha Rounds.

While ICAC concluded the plenary session on a high note, it is the warmth and hospitality displayed by the DAFF that resonated loudly at the closure.

The meeting presented an opportunity for international delegates to sample locally produced agricultural products and the department's leadership delivered.
